1. David Crosthwait
David Crosthwait is an iconic black inventor that focused on the HVAC field. This black inventor went to school to become an engineer, and although it was hard to find work, he made it work! 2. Alice Parker
Alice Parker is one of many African American inventors that created an HVAC invention that safely solved a big problem. Before Alice Parker’s invention, a heating system worked with fire by burning coal and wood. It was not safe, and there were frequent fires because of the flammable materials and lack of air circulation.
This young black woman inventor noticed this and made a gas furnace with ductwork. Not only was this a safer option for people, but it was also a lot more affordable, meaning that all households could own a gas furnace. Ductwork is still a concept used today in the HVAC industry.
3. Lewis Latimer
Latimer contributed to the HVAC industry by inventing an indoor air quality improvement system. This system uses water vapor and condensation, which aids in air purification. Although this black inventor made the HVAC contribution, he was likely known for his other telephone and lightbulb inventions.
From Thomas Edison’s designs, Latimer created a better and more stable version of the light bulb that we use today. From there, he played a significant role in creating the telephone. While he did not invent the phone on his own, he made the blueprints and worked at the electrical company involved.
