Three Common Signs that an AC is Not Working

There are a lot of signs that can point to an AC unit no longer working and needing to be replaced. Sometimes the unit can be repaired, but occasionally it is more cost-efficient to get a new, more energy-efficient AC because of age and other factors. The most common signs the air conditioning unit isn’t working are loud thuds, unusual smells, sudden high energy bills, old age, and the system's overall appearance.

smell

Loud Thuds and Awful Smells

For the most part, AC systems do not have a sound except for the motor when it is on. Most AC systems are also located outside, meaning homeowners should not be hearing the sound of the motor inside their home.

If sounds from the air conditioning unit can be heard inside, it could be a sign of old age and that the machine is beginning to break down. Usually, loud thuds and noises mean that the unit needs a good cleaning and overall maintenance.

The same goes for awful smells. When a scent is coming from the air vent leading to the heating and cooling system, it is likely because something is wrong inside. This is especially concerning if the scent smells like something is burning.

Sudden High Energy Bills bill

As the AC system ages, it will likely need to work harder to cool a home. This decrease in efficiency leads to an increase in the cost of energy bills. Proper maintenance of the air conditioning unit can help homeowners figure out if a rise in energy bills is due to age because an important part of maintenance is changing the air filters

It is recommended that air filters be replaced at least every three months. When not changed for a long time, dust and debris will build up and make it harder for air to get through them. This also creates a decrease in efficiency and a rise in energy bills. If changing the filter doesn't change the increased cost of utilities, it is more likely to be due to old age.

Additional Signs to Look Out for

During routine maintenance, experts also recommend searching the AC system for imperfections. Although it’s normal for a system to have some discoloration, there shouldn’t be rust, and there should be protection near the important pieces like the motor. It is also important to look at the wires and cords for wear and tear. Sometimes outside animals will take a bite or claw at them, causing problems.

If homeowners notice any of these signs pointing to a problem with their air conditioning system, they should contact their local heating and cooling company for assistance.
